Better Than The Producers!
Blunt and in your face, this Brecthian fable has outsize energy,
as does the beefy Kurt Weill-like score by Mark Hollmann and Greg
Kotis. They aim for comic operatic heights and
keep the audience soaring."
- Richard Zolgin, TIme
Magazine
"Is Broadway ready for Urinetown? I say, let
it rip! It's a wonderful show, a mixture of sophistication
and naiveté, of down-at-the-heel glamour and Broadway chic."
- Clive Barnes, The
New York Post
"Like everyone else who first heard of a show called Urinetown
The Musical, I made a face and expressed disgust at the title.
But so much has been written about this work that I risked it.
I had the time of my life! Urinetown is one of the cleverest,
most adroit, funniest evenings I've spent in many a season"
- Liz Smith,
Syndicated Columnist
"What kind of musical is this? An original
one. A show so intelligently calibrated in its audacity that
it can provoke enthusiasm even in a critic weary of theatrical navel
gazing. This exuberant musical with its cagey score and boisterous
choreography already has the imprimatur of being hip, having become
a word-of-mouth hot ticket during previews. Urinetown's gloriously
sensible message is: 'Hey it's only theater, but isn't it wonderful?'"
- Bruce Weber The
New York Times
"The title is so awful, I didn't want to go,
but Urinetown is a happy surprise - irreverent, nimble, with
a fine, catchy score. The show takes every Broadway banality and
subverts them with refreshing cynicism. The songs abound in wit
and panache. They're not just funny, they're genuinely good."
- Amy Gamerman, Wall
Street Journal
"Broadway's 'It' Musical. Somewhere
beyond the sublime, beyond the ridiculous lies Urinetown. Inspired,
fresh, exuberant, even moving, brought off, believe it or not, sans
bathroom humor. You've got to go. Grade:
A!"
- Scott Brown, Entertainment
Weekly
"With a God-awful title and a production that steals from just
about every musical hit you can name, Mark Hollmann and Greg Kotis
have created a supremely funny, bitingly smart
and splendidly enjoyable show - and one of the spring's most
inventive theatrical events."
- Webster Younce, Time Out
New York
"A comic gem! Witty, lovable, deliriously
shameless, self aware, self-reverential and as self-confident as
any newcomer project in recent memory. Urinetown is elevated silliness
of the highest order that makes a gratifying case for the restorative
return to knowing foolishness and the smartly absurd. The show winks
at everything from Hamlet's father's ghost to West Side Story, from
the revolutionary pretensions of Les Mis, to the revivalist joy
of Guys & Dolls."
- Linda Winer, Newsday
"Urinetown has a wit, intelligence and originality
found in the best musical spoofs, from 'The Boy Friend' to
'Little Mary Sunshine' to 'Dames at Sea.' A loony, loopy delight!"
- Mike Kuchwara, Associated
Press
"The in crowd - first in line at every 'happening' - can be
found these nights climbing the stairs at 314 West 54th Street.
Color it different, but get there fast! What kind
of musical is this? A fresh, unique, original, impudent, colorful,
exciting, irreverent, surprising and wonderful musical, that's all!
A strange, macabre, eccentric, improbable and wildly indescribable
entertainment. Urinetown follows only one rule: expect the
unexpected. You've never experienced anything quite like it."
- Rex Reed, New York Observer
"Delightful and ditsy, affectionate
and hilarious, a fresh and funny musical
parody."
- Donald Lyons, New York Post
"Offbeat, original and unusually entertaining. Its smart silliness
provokes a surprising flood of laughter."
- Michael Sommers, Newark Star-Ledger
"The hippest musical in the Big Apple.
Its rib-tickling book by Greg Kotis and lively score by Mark Hollmann
adds up to the show to which everybody "in the know" has
gotta go."
- Fred Winship, United Press
International
"Hilarious, high-spirited mayhem!"
- Brendan
Lemon, Financial Times of London
"One of the hottest theater tickets in town. Definitely
a musical for our times. Uniquely outrageous."
- Michael Killian, Chicago
Tribune
"The most appallingly titled show of the season
is also one of the best. From the opening notes of Greg Kotis
and Mark Hollmann's nouveau Brecht-Weill musical, you know you are
hearing from major talent. Melodic, clever, sardonic, well-executed.
The cast is sensational and so is Urinetown."
- Christine Dolen, Miami Herald
"The cleverest musical in New York.
Howlingly funny. Just about everything about the production - John
Rando's in-your-face direction, a fine cast and the on-stage band
- is first-rate. A+!"
- Tony Brown, Cleveland Plain
